The boat days leave from the marina at Town of 1770. The Lady Musgrave crossing is open ocean, about 90 minutes each way: take seasickness tablets the night before and the morning of the trip.

Before you book

A coral cay with its own lagoon.

Lady Musgrave is a small, low coral cay: sand made of broken coral, a forest of pisonia trees, and around it a ring of reef that encloses a turquoise lagoon. Boats come in through a channel and anchor inside, which is why the snorkelling is so sheltered. Queensland Parks calls it "excellent and protected", and the reef ring keeps outside currents away.

There is no resort, no shop and no fresh water on the island: only toilets and a campground for up to 40 people. Everyone else comes for the day by boat, from Town of 1770 (about 90 minutes) or from Bundaberg (about 2 hours 15). It is part of Capricornia Cays National Park and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, so the rules are strict: no fires, no dogs ashore, a go-slow zone for turtles, and no swimming in the boat channel.

59 km

From Town of 1770 to the island, as Queensland Parks measures it. From Bundaberg it is 96 km.

Seasick?

The crossing is open ocean. Lady Musgrave Experience recommends a tablet the night before and one in the morning.

02

Coral rubble lines the waterline. Queensland Parks suggests dive boots to reach the water.

03

Stingers

The official season runs November to May. A full lycra or wetsuit is the advice.

04

Bring water

There is none on the island. Day boats carry drinks; campers bring at least 5 litres a day.

The guide

Lady Musgrave Island, explained

Lady Musgrave gives you an island with its own lagoon. Here is how to read the trips.

The island and the lagoon

Lady Musgrave is the southernmost island of Capricornia Cays National Park, inside the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Only Lady Elliot Island lies further south in the chain. The cay is small and low, made of broken coral, with an old pisonia forest where black noddies nest from October to April and white-bellied sea eagles live all year. The reef around it encloses a lagoon that boats can enter; Gladstone's regional tourism board calls it the only coral island on the reef with a navigable lagoon.

Inside, patch reefs and bommies rise from a sandy floor in calm water. That is the whole appeal for snorkellers: reef fish, rays and green turtles without the swell of an outer reef. Green turtles are seen all year, the operators say, and four species visit the national park to nest.

Day boats anchor inside the lagoon.

Island day or reef day

Read the inclusions. The day cruise from 1770 takes you into the lagoon and onto the island: glass-bottom boat, guided walk, snorkelling, lunch. The small-group snorkel day leaves from the same marina but goes to reef sites in the Capricorn Bunker Group with a guide in the water and no more than ten people, and it does not land on the island. Both are good days. They are not the same day.

The honest small print: the crossing is open ocean, and reviewers mention seasickness on choppy days. The day cruise listing highly recommends seasickness medication, and Lady Musgrave Experience suggests a tablet the night before and another in the morning. Buy them from a chemist before you travel.

From 1770 or from Bundaberg?

From Town of 1770 the crossing is about 90 minutes; start times vary, so check yours when you book. From Bundaberg Port Marina, Lady Musgrave Experience sails daily at 7:00am, about 2 hours 15 each way, and moors at its own pontoon in the lagoon with an underwater observatory. The 1770 trip is shorter on the water and cheaper on the operators' own price lists; the Bundaberg trip suits you if you are already in Bundaberg. Our day trip guide compares them line by line.

Timing it

Summer brings the warmest water, turtle nesting from late October to February and hatchlings from about December. It is also stinger season, November to May, so wear a full suit. In winter, humpbacks may be seen on the crossing from July to October and the manta peak from May to August, with cooler water. Campers need to plan around the closure from late January to the Easter school holidays.

FAQ

Questions before you book

Straight answers to what people ask most about Lady Musgrave Island.

Is it worth going to Lady Musgrave Island?

For snorkelling and turtles, yes. The island is an uninhabited coral cay inside its own reef lagoon, and Queensland Parks calls the lagoon snorkelling "excellent and protected". The operators say green turtles live there all year; seabirds nest in the pisonia forest from October to April, and there is no resort. The catch is the open-ocean crossing: take seasickness tablets. More in the day trip guide.

Is there a day trip to Lady Musgrave Island?

Yes, from two ports. From Town of 1770 the boat takes about 90 minutes each way and the day lasts about 9 hours; this day cruise includes a glass-bottom boat, a guided island walk and lunch. From Bundaberg Port Marina, Lady Musgrave Experience sails at 7:00am daily, about 2 hours 15 minutes each way, with a pontoon in the lagoon.

How long is the boat ride to Lady Musgrave Island?

About 90 minutes from Town of 1770, which is 59 km away, and about 2 hours 15 minutes from Bundaberg, 96 km away, according to Queensland Parks and the operators. 1770 Reef, the Town of 1770 operator, says its departure times change daily with the tide; check the start time for your date when you book. See 1770 to Lady Musgrave.

How much does it cost to go to Lady Musgrave Island?

On the operators' own 2026/27 price lists, a full day from Town of 1770 is A$295 for an adult (1770 Reef) and from Bundaberg A$320 (Lady Musgrave Experience, rising to A$350 on 1 April 2027). On this site the 1770 day cruise is from $225 (US dollars, as GetYourGuide lists it). Prices move; the full list is in the 2026/27 prices post.

What is the cheapest way to get to Lady Musgrave Island?

The cheapest public trip we found is 1770 Reef's snorkel-only lagoon trip at A$250 an adult on its current price list, but it has no island landing and no glass-bottom boat. The cheapest full day with a landing is the 1770 departure. A camping permit costs A$7.75 per person a night (from 1 July 2026), but the boat transfer is the expensive part.

Can you swim at Lady Musgrave Island?

Yes. The lagoon is ringed by reef, which keeps outside currents away, so it suits beginners. Stay out of the boat access channel, where swimming and snorkelling are banned, and never snorkel alone. Reef shoes help on the coral rubble at the waterline.

Are there stingers at Lady Musgrave Island?

The official marine stinger season in Queensland runs from November to May, and Surf Life Saving places Lady Musgrave inside the Irukandji range. Lady Musgrave Experience says it has "never had any harmful stingers" in the lagoon but cannot guarantee there will be none. A full-body lycra or wetsuit is the official advice. More in snorkelling, stingers and sharks.

Does Lady Musgrave have sharks?

Yes. Lady Musgrave Experience lists black-tip and white-tip reef sharks as regulars at its outer-reef dive sites, along with larger species, and names sharks among the lagoon's residents with turtles and rays. Queensland Parks warns that sharks are present in the open ocean all year.

Can I stay on Lady Musgrave Island?

Only in a tent. There is no resort and no accommodation. Queensland Parks allows up to 40 campers at a time, for up to 21 nights, from the Easter school holidays until the day after the Australia Day weekend; you bring all your water. The other overnight option is a bed on the Lady Musgrave HQ pontoon in the lagoon. See camping on Lady Musgrave.

Can you fish at Lady Musgrave Island?

Only where the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park zoning allows it, and within Fisheries Queensland bag and size limits. The Queensland Parks map shows Marine National Park (green) and Habitat Protection zones around the island, and Lady Musgrave Experience says its Lady Musgrave HQ pontoon sits in a green (no-take) zone. Check the zoning map before you drop a line.

Is Lady Musgrave Island on the Great Barrier Reef?

Yes. It is the southernmost island of Capricornia Cays National Park, in the southern Great Barrier Reef and inside the World Heritage Area. Only Lady Elliot Island lies further south in the chain. Compare the two in Lady Musgrave or Lady Elliot.

Is there a promo code for Lady Musgrave Island?

We found no official promo code on either operator's site. The official discounts are different: Lady Musgrave Experience takes 15% off when you bundle two of its day tours, 1770 Reef has senior and student fares, and the Lady Musgrave day cruise on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before.
