Booking choice: The Lady Musgrave Island day cruise, from $225 per person. Check dates Tour details
Lady Musgrave is the southernmost island of Capricornia Cays National Park, a small coral cay inside its own lagoon on the southern Great Barrier Reef. Nobody lives there. There is no shop and no fresh water, and the only way out is by boat or seaplane.
Queensland Parks says the island usually receives a commercial service every day, weather permitting. Two ports run day trips: Town of 1770, 59 km away, and Bundaberg, 96 km away. Which one suits you depends mostly on where you are sleeping the night before.
The quick answer
Yes. Queensland Parks says the island usually receives a commercial service daily, weather permitting. From Town of 1770 the boat takes about 90 minutes each way and the day lasts 8.5 to 9 hours; from Bundaberg Port Marina, Lady Musgrave Experience boards at 7:00am and is back about 5pm. Official adult fares for 2026/27 are A$295 from 1770 (1770 Reef) and A$320 from Bundaberg. Take seasickness tablets.
Is there a day trip to Lady Musgrave Island?
Yes, from two ports. Town of 1770 is the closer one, about 90 minutes by boat; Bundaberg Port Marina is about 2 hours 15 minutes away.
Both trips give you the lagoon, snorkelling, a glass-bottom boat and a guided walk on the island. The difference is the base. From 1770, 1770 Reef says its boat moors inside the lagoon and stays your base for the day. From Bundaberg you spend the middle of the day on a three-level pontoon called Lady Musgrave HQ, with an underwater observatory.

Book a day trip from Town of 1770 or Bundaberg, charter a boat, or bring your own. There is no public ferry.
The commercial day boats are how almost everyone goes. Campers use transfers, charter boats and seaplane drop-offs, and private boats are welcome if the skipper follows the rules for the lagoon.
- Day trips: 1770 Reef from the Town of 1770 marina, and Lady Musgrave Experience from Bundaberg Port Marina at Burnett Heads.
- Charter flights: Queensland Parks lists Seair, which flies campers in from the Gold Coast, Brisbane (Redcliffe), Hervey Bay or Bundaberg.
- Your own boat: anchor in the sheltered lagoon, never in the access channel or the no-anchoring area. In the go-slow area the rule is no planing speed, or any speed likely to strike a turtle.
People searching for a ferry usually mean the day boats. Campers book a transfer instead, covered in the camping guide.

What happens on a day trip from 1770?
1770 Reef's check-in is somewhere between 6am and 11am depending on the tide, then 90 minutes out and several hours in and around the lagoon.
1770 Reef says its departure times change every day with the tide, so the check-in time can be as early as 6am or as late as 11am. A full day runs about 8.5 to 9 hours. Once inside the lagoon the boat moors up; there is no pontoon on this trip.
- A glass-bottom boat tour of about 45 minutes (1770 Reef's timing).
- A guided island walk of about 45 minutes through the pisonia forest.
- Snorkelling for one to two hours, with mask, snorkel, fins and a flotation aid.
- Food: morning tea, a lunch of wraps and salads, afternoon tea, and hot drinks all day.
The day cruise on this site lists the same pieces: the power catamaran, the glass-bottom boat, the guided walk, snorkel gear, lunch and both teas. It is a big boat, with up to 100 people, but one guest on a full boat said they "didn’t feel like we were on top of one another snorkelling or doing the glass bottom boat and island walk" (Alana, Jan 2026).

Lagoon, glass-bottom boat, island walk and lunch in one day from 1770, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Check dates for the Lady Musgrave Island day cruiseIs there a boat that goes from Bundaberg to Lady Musgrave Island?
Yes. Lady Musgrave Experience sails daily from Bundaberg Port Marina at Burnett Heads, boarding at 7:00am, about 2 hours 15 minutes each way.
Arrive by 6:45am. The boat is Reef Empress, which Bundaberg Regional Council's news site describes as a 35-metre catamaran. The operator gives about 4.5 hours at the Lady Musgrave HQ pontoon, and you are back at the marina about 5pm, around 10 hours after boarding.
The full-day fare includes a buffet lunch, light morning and afternoon tea, the glass-bottom boat, a 40-minute guided island walk with bird watching, snorkel gear, a fish-feeding demonstration and a reef talk on the way out. On the pontoon you get the underwater observatory, sun loungers, a kiosk bar and warm freshwater showers. Towels are not included and wetsuits cost A$15 extra.
This trip is not bookable on this site. Its strengths are real: the pontoon is a comfortable base for families, and the observatory shows the reef to anyone who would rather not swim. Bundaberg is also the easier airport, with daily Qantas flights from Brisbane. The trade-off is the longer crossing, 96 km against 59 km from 1770.
How much does it cost to go to Lady Musgrave Island?
On the operators' own 2026/27 price lists, an adult pays A$295 from Town of 1770 and A$320 from Bundaberg. Bundaberg fares rise to A$350 on 1 April 2027.
These are the operators' own fares in Australian dollars, as listed for each season. The Lady Musgrave Experience fares include the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority's reef charge (A$8.50 a person) and A$2.60 of Queensland Parks fees.
| Fare (AUD) | Adult | Child 4-14 | Family 2+2 | Season |
|---|---|---|---|---|

On this site the Lady Musgrave day cruise from 1770 is listed from $225 in US dollars, the way GetYourGuide shows it, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Every season change is tracked in the 2026/27 prices post.
What is the cheapest way to get to Lady Musgrave Island?
The cheapest public trip is 1770 Reef's snorkel-only lagoon trip at A$250 an adult on its current price list, but it skips the island and the glass-bottom boat. The cheapest full day with a landing is the 1770 departure at A$295 (2026/27).
Snorkel-only trips last about five hours, with up to two hours in the water. 1770 Reef is clear that these fares give no access to the glass-bottom boat or the island itself. If walking on the cay is part of why you are going, pay for the full day.
- Senior and student fares: A$275 on 1770 Reef's 2026/27 list, with a valid Australian card.
- Family fares: A$850 for two adults and two children from 1770 (2026/27), and A$165 for each extra child.
- Two tours from Bundaberg: Lady Musgrave Experience takes 15% off when you bundle two of its day tours.
- Camping: the permit is only A$7.75 a person a night (from 1 July 2026), but the boat transfer is the expensive part.
We found no official promo codes. If the reef matters more than the island, the small-group snorkel day from 1770 takes no more than ten snorkellers to two reef sites with a guide in the water. It does not land on Lady Musgrave Island.

Two reef sites, a guide in the water and no more than ten snorkellers, full-length wetsuit included. It does not land on Lady Musgrave Island.

The island track is 1.1 km one way and takes about 20 minutes. The guided walks on the day trips last 40 to 45 minutes.
Queensland Parks grades the track as easy. It crosses the island from the northern beach to the camping area, and a 300-metre side track leads to the southern beach. The guided walks go slower, through the pisonia forest.
Nobody publishes an official time for a lap of the whole beach. Wear reef shoes: Queensland Parks recommends dive boots because you may have to cross coral rubble to reach the water.

What should you bring on a Lady Musgrave day trip?
Seasickness tablets, reef shoes, sun protection, a towel and a change of clothes. There is nothing to buy on the island.
The crossing is open ocean. The day cruise listing says seasickness medication is highly recommended, and Lady Musgrave Experience suggests a tablet the night before and another in the morning. Buy them at a chemist before you arrive.
- Reef shoes or water shoes for the coral rubble.
- A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Shade is scarce in the lagoon.
- A towel and a change of clothes for the ride home.
- A wetsuit or lycra suit. Wetsuits are not included on the 1770 day cruise, so bring your own lycra suit or wetsuit. From November to May a full-body suit is also the official stinger advice.
- A reusable water bottle. Tea, coffee and chilled water are on board.
Hotel pickup is not included from 1770, so plan how you reach the marina for an early check-in. The details are in 1770 to Lady Musgrave, and the stinger question gets its own page in snorkelling, stingers and sharks.
